Heavy Metal Les Paul
I wanted to hotrod a guitar specifically for high gain metal. I started
with a relatively cheap gibson les paul studio with a satin ebony
finish. After pulling the stock pickups and selling them on ebay, I
installed a set of emg 81/85 pickups with the new chrome finish. Then I
wired in the EMG afterburner in place of the lead tone knob. I must say I
am very pleased with the results. I can take a moderately high gain amp
like a JCM 800 or my peavey classic 30 and push them into modern metal
territory. I've included a wiring diagram for my set-up. I would
recommend doing the 18v mod as well.

I've received several emails asking how to install this with passive pickups. Here is a wiring diagram for people who have two passive pickups, one volume, one tone, and a 3 way switch (like most LTD models). Keep in mind that you will have to drill an extra hole to mount the afterburner. If you don't feel comfortable drilling a new hole, you could delete the tone knob from the circuit. BUT your guitar will act as if the tone is always on 10.
